How to Stay Relaxed and Level-headed When Starting a New Job?

Allow me to first congratulate you on your new job! It's an exciting time, and I am confident that you have worked so hard to get to where you are now. But just like with any new thing, a new job can evoke a whole array of emotions. You could be anxious about the workplace, your new coworkers, future tasks, and where you fit in.

And that’s okay.

The sooner you face these fears, relax, and remind yourself that you can do this, easing into a new job will be a cinch.

Take a Deep Breath

You’ll be on edge on the first day, and that can last for a few weeks if you keep carrying that tension with you. Your body language could give your nerves away, which may then push people away if you’re inclined to keep your wall up. Being tense could even make sitting at your workspace uncomfortable, since stress gathers around the neck, shoulders, and back.
If you are naturally shy and nervous, take things slowly and breathe. At your workspace, in your car, or even in the bathroom, do some breathing exercises to calm your nerves. Remember, everything it took to get the job and being selected out of many other candidates. Breathe in deeply and slowly, either chanting aloud or internally, “I can do this”.

Depending on the space around you, stretch if you can. You will be amazed by how much reaching across your body, up over your head, twisting your body, flexing your hands, or gently rotating your head side to side melts away stress.

Stay Organised

When a new job is different from something you’ve ever done before, try creating a list of goals and ways you want to remain calm and organised on the job. This is for your personal growth so that you can remain focused and not feel overwhelmed by being in a new environment.

Network, Get to Know New People

It's often said that people look outside of themselves when their nervous and start comparing themselves to other people. But you should do the total opposite. Try to get to know your co-workers and those who aren't working a desk job in your building. You will be surprised who you meet and how they can help you in your new position. Be open to new possibilities and get involved. You never know how far you will get.

Positively Love the New

To put it bluntly, we don’t immerse ourselves into something new if we don’t want something out of it or didn’t find it exciting. That’s why life is all about having new experiences and learning from them.

It’s natural to be unsure about a situation that is unfamiliar to you, and you are allowed to fell that way. Don’t be afraid to take breaks when you get overwhelmed.

The key is remembering that you are capable of anything. So keep calm and this too shall pass.
