Ask Bliss Women: What do you think about the blood type diet?

Q: “I’ve been struggling with my diet for years. I’ve tried a variety of internet diet suggestions for months and I haven’t seen a change. But recently I came across the blood type diet and I would love your advice. What do you think about the blood type diet?” - The Avid Dieter

A: “The blood type diet is based on a theory that determines which foods are best for your health. It is suggested that following this diet will improve health and decrease the risk of chronic disease. I have not seen enough scientific evidence to support this theory. However, if we take a look at the four suggested diets (depending on blood type), they are based on consuming healthy, whole foods. This is a positive aspect of the diet. I cannot say that I would recommend this diet specifically considering the lack of scientific evidence.

What I can suggest is to find a diet that works for YOU. All diets will work if they are adhered to! What is most important is that you find an enjoyable and healthy eating regiment aligns with your lifestyle and goals. I would not suggest beginning a very restrictive diet which cuts out entire food groups for anyone. This type of approach, while useful for some, is not sustainable.

Your diet should consist of a variety of foods from all five food groups - fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy. This will provide all the nutrients your body needs.

Focus on making healthy food choices, exercise regularly, drink lots of water, and get proper sleep! Avoid foods high in saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. Focus on making small, healthy changes each day, and all of these small changes will add to the big picture. Remember, lasting change takes time and consistency. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the process of improving your health.”
